Winterveld

Winterveld is a big town in South Africa’s Gauteng province. The settlement is part of the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality and is located northwest of Pretoria.

Despite its 40-kilometer distance from the city, the 120-square-kilometer territory was part of Bophuthatswana’s rural ‘homeland.’ Despite its rural appearance, Winterveld is substantially linked to the metropolitan economy, with agriculture serving mostly as a temporary or ad-hoc source of income.

The territory around Winterveld was included into Bophuthswana between 1938 and 1945 as part of the government’s objective of building “African homelands” known as Bantustans. The town was dubbed the “black city” at one point.
